Missed the 35-day window for a birth, marriage, death, divorce or migration? Registration does not close. Late registration is expressly provided for — currently at Rs 200 per event inside Nepal — but older events require better evidence and a legally eligible informant.

Who Notifies Which Event
- Birth: father or mother; otherwise an adult (18+) family member
- Death: father, mother, husband, wife, son or daughter; otherwise an adult family member
- Marriage: both spouses — where one refuses, a court order establishing the relationship can give the other a basis
- Divorce: either former spouse
- Migration: an adult (18+) family member
If the informant is abroad, deceased or unreachable, do not pick a substitute on your own assumption — get the ward’s written checklist for alternative informants, power of attorney or sarjamin.
Evidence by Event Type
Late birth registration
Parents’ citizenship, hospital birth report, vaccination card, first school admission record and any old identity documents. Adult cases may require sarjamin or a police report. Births before the earlier 2033 registration law cannot currently be newly registered as vital events — ask about ward-chairperson certification. Full guide: late birth registration for adults.
Late marriage registration
Both citizenships, photographs, evidence of the true marriage date/place and proof that any earlier marriage legally ended. Legal age and validity rules at the time of marriage must have been met. Paying a late fee cannot validate a void child marriage or polygamous marriage.
Late death registration
Deceased’s citizenship, hospital death report, police report or home-death evidence, and the eligible informant’s citizenship. Very old deaths may be supported by inheritance, pension or land records — sarjamin may still be required.
Late migration registration
Update the old ward’s family record first, then take the transfer letter and complete arrival registration at the new ward. Keep clear evidence of the year you left and residence at the new address.
Events Abroad, Registered Late
The Act allows notification within 35 days at a Nepali mission, or within 35 days of entering Nepal to the local registrar. Designated missions currently run birth and death registration only; late registration there costs USD 25 or the local equivalent. Foreign marriage or divorce certificates must be authenticated and then registered at the relevant ward in Nepal.
Late Registration Checklist
- Identify the event, its true date and place, and the correct registering ward.
- Determine the eligible informant and the oldest reliable evidence.
- Verify it isn’t already registered elsewhere.
- Complete the online pre-application or ward form and submit originals.
- Keep the Rs 200 receipt, application number and copies of everything submitted.
- Complete any sarjamin or police report truthfully.
- Check every field on the certificate before updating other documents.
