Here’s how to register at the ward office, what both spouses must bring, and the 35-day rule that decides whether you pay nothing or Rs 200.

Ward Registration vs Court Marriage
These are different processes. A marriage already solemnised by tradition, ritual or social custom is recorded as a vital event at the ward. Where to Register
Normally at the ward office of the permanent address of either spouse. Where the event occurred elsewhere, that local registrar can register after confirming it isn’t already registered in the permanent ward. Never register the same marriage in two places.
Documents Required
- Both spouses’ Nepali citizenship certificates (or official nationality documents)
- Recent auto-size photographs of both — two copies each is a safe preparation
- Evidence of the date and place of marriage; invitations, photographs or religious/social evidence may be requested
- If married through court: the court’s marriage-by-registration certificate or order
- If previously married: the final divorce judgment/registration or the former spouse’s death registration
- If one spouse is abroad: a power of attorney certified through the Nepali mission, in an acceptable form
- For a foreign spouse: passport, visa, nationality, single-status/no-objection documents and required authentication

Step-by-Step
- Align both spouses’ age records, marital status, Nepali/English name spellings and permanent addresses against documents.
- Use the online pre-application where available, or collect the marriage notification form at the ward.
- Both spouses attend the registrar and declare the true details and date of marriage.
- Submit originals, photographs and proof that any earlier marriage has legally ended.
- If past 35 days, obtain the official Rs 200 receipt.
- Check the certificate immediately — names, ages, nationality, address and marriage date.
If One Spouse Cannot Attend
Departmental guidance provides for a power of attorney certified through a Nepali mission where one spouse is abroad. An ordinary private document may not be enough — confirm the required language, notarisation, witnesses and scope with both the mission and the ward beforehand.
If a spouse refuses to register, the other party can register on the basis of a court order establishing the marital relationship. Where a spouse died before registration, an ordinary ward marriage certificate may not be issued — ask about ward-chairperson certification or establishing the relationship through court.
Marriages That Cannot Be Registered
Child marriage and polygamous marriage that the law treats as void cannot be validated by registration — including those after Bhadra 1, 2075. However, this must not affect the birth registration rights of a child born of such a relationship.
