Updated: August 2, 2026 · Scope: 20 Class “A” commercial banks licensed by Nepal Rastra Bank
Need to receive a salary, freelance payment, business payment, education refund or remittance from abroad? The sender will ask for your Nepal bank’s SWIFT code or BIC. This guide lists the code for every commercial bank currently licensed by Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB), with the eight-character code, the commonly requested 11-character format, head-office location and an official verification link for each.
NARBNPKA. If the sending form requires 11 characters, use NARBNPKAXXX after confirming it with Nabil Bank or the beneficiary branch. What Is a SWIFT Code or BIC?
A SWIFT code, formally called a Business Identifier Code (BIC), identifies a bank or financial institution in international financial messages. Swift defines a BIC as an eight-character identifier with an optional three-character branch identifier — which is why international transfer forms sometimes ask for eight characters and sometimes for 11.
The code normally follows this pattern:
For example, NARBNPKAXXX breaks down as NARB (Nabil Bank’s assigned institution code), NP (Nepal), KA (location code) and XXX (default primary-office branch identifier). A BIC is assigned — it should never be guessed from a bank’s current brand name.
XXX. Use the exact format requested by the sending bank or platform, and confirm it with the recipient bank when in doubt.SWIFT Codes of All Commercial Banks in Nepal
The bank list and head-office locations below follow NRB’s licensed BFI list as of mid-June 2026. Codes were checked against each bank’s own contact, remittance or correspondent-banking page wherever one is published.

Nabil Bank SWIFT Code: Complete Details
Nabil Bank publishes NARBNPKA as its SWIFT code. The complete default 11-character form is NARBNPKAXXX.
- SWIFT/BIC (8 characters)
NARBNPKA- Full BIC (11 characters)
NARBNPKAXXX- Bank name
- Nabil Bank Limited
- Head office
- Nabil Center, Beena Marg
- Branch code
XXX(primary office)- City
- Kathmandu
- Country
- Nepal
- Currency
- NPR account, foreign-currency inward accepted
The assigned bank identifier is NARB, which reflects the bank’s historical name. That is exactly why the correct code is NARBNPKA and not something guessed from the letters in “Nabil” — a good reminder that BICs are never derivable from a brand name.

How to Receive Money in Nepal Through SWIFT
Ask the beneficiary bank for an official inward-remittance or wire-transfer instruction, especially when the payment is in USD, EUR, GBP, AUD, JPY or another foreign currency. The sending bank will normally need:
- Beneficiary’s full name exactly as recorded in the Nepal bank account.
- Beneficiary account number — recheck every digit before submitting.
- Beneficiary bank name and the correct SWIFT/BIC.
- Branch name and address where the beneficiary account is maintained.
- Beneficiary address and contact details if requested by the sending bank.
- Payment currency, amount and purpose — salary, service export, family maintenance, education or business payment.
- Correspondent or intermediary bank details when the Nepal bank’s currency-specific instruction requires them.
The receiving bank may request supporting documents — an invoice, contract, salary slip or proof of purpose — depending on the transaction and applicable foreign-exchange and compliance requirements. Charges may be taken by the sending bank, the intermediary bank and the receiving bank. Agree in advance whether the transfer uses OUR, SHA or BEN charge instructions, because that decides how much actually lands in the account.
SWIFT Code vs IBAN vs Local Branch Code
| Identifier | What it identifies | Typical use in Nepal |
|---|---|---|
| SWIFT/BIC | A bank or financial institution, with an optional branch/department identifier | International bank messages and wire transfers |
| Account number | The beneficiary’s individual bank account | Required to credit the correct customer |
| Local branch code | A specific domestic bank branch | May be requested separately; not the same as the SWIFT suffix |
| IBAN | A standardised international account-number format used by participating countries | Nepal banks generally use account number + SWIFT/BIC instead; confirm with the bank |
| Correspondent-bank BIC | An intermediary bank used to settle a particular currency | Needed only when the receiving bank’s currency-specific instruction includes it |
Important: The XXX at the end of an 11-character BIC is not your account’s domestic branch code. It is the default SWIFT branch identifier attached to the bank’s eight-character BIC.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Nabil Bank SWIFT code?
Nabil Bank’s eight-character SWIFT/BIC is NARBNPKA. If a form requires 11 characters, the default primary-office form is NARBNPKAXXX.
What does XXX mean at the end of a SWIFT code?
XXX is the default three-character branch identifier attached to an eight-character BIC. A BIC ending in XXX is equivalent to the corresponding eight-character BIC.
Are SWIFT code and BIC the same?
In everyday banking, yes. “SWIFT code” and “BIC” commonly refer to the same identifier used in international financial messaging.
Do all branches of a Nepal bank use the same SWIFT code?
Many Nepal banks publish one primary eight-character BIC for transfers to accounts held at any branch. A bank may still maintain a branch- or department-specific identifier, so ask the receiving bank if a sender demands a specific BIC11.
Do Nepal bank accounts have IBAN numbers?
Nepal banks generally use the beneficiary account number together with a SWIFT/BIC rather than a separate Nepal IBAN. Confirm the required format with the receiving bank — some Nepali banks state explicitly that they do not have an IBAN.
What details are needed to receive an international wire transfer in Nepal?
The sender normally needs the beneficiary’s exact account name, account number, bank name, SWIFT/BIC, branch name or address, beneficiary address, currency and payment purpose. A correspondent bank may also be required for some currencies.
What happens if the SWIFT code is wrong?
The transfer may be delayed, rejected or returned, and intermediary or return fees may be deducted. Contact the sending bank immediately with the transfer reference, MT103 or UETR if an incorrect code was used.
Do development banks and finance companies in Nepal have SWIFT codes?
Not every licensed development bank or finance company operates its own direct SWIFT/BIC for customer transfers. This article therefore covers NRB’s Class “A” commercial banks. Customers of other institutions should request that institution’s current inward-remittance or correspondent-bank instruction directly.
Is a dollar card the same as a SWIFT transfer?
No. A dollar card is mainly used for eligible outward online payments, while SWIFT is a bank-to-bank international messaging network commonly used for inward and outward wire transfers.
Where should I verify a SWIFT code before sending money?
Check the receiving bank’s official website, contact the beneficiary branch, or request a signed payment instruction. For the standard itself, Swift’s official BIC resources explain the eight-character code and optional three-character branch identifier.
Sources and Editorial Method
Scope was checked against Nepal Rastra Bank’s List of Banks and Financial Institutions — NRB’s supervision reporting confirms the commercial-bank count has stood at 20 since the merger-driven consolidation reduced it from 27. Every code in the table above was independently re-checked before publication: 14 of the 20 were confirmed on the bank’s own official website, and the remaining six (NIMB, Standard Chartered Nepal, Nepal SBI, Citizens, Prime Commercial and Sanima) were confirmed through multiple mutually-agreeing SWIFT registries because those banks’ sites publish the code only inside JavaScript-rendered pages. No code was contradicted by any source. Note the genuine outlier: NIMB’s code ends in KT, not KA — that is the legacy Nepal Investment Bank identifier retained after the Mega merger, not a typo. BIC format and the optional three-character branch identifier were checked against Swift’s official BIC standard page and its published BIC Policy. Each bank code was cross-checked against the official bank link shown in the table.
