Google has changed what the Gemini free plan gives users in Nepal and everywhere else. According to Google’s Gemini Apps Help page, the new model availability “will start to take effect for users without an AI subscription on October 9th” 2026, for personal accounts. Free users now get an “Auto” setting that sends most prompts to Flash-Lite, Google’s fastest and lightest model, and only routes harder prompts to Flash or Pro when Gemini decides they need it.
For students, freelancers and small shops in Nepal who use Gemini for free, this is the biggest change to the product so far. This post explains what Google’s pages say, what you lose, what the paid plans keep, and which free alternatives still give you a stronger model without paying in dollars.

What Google actually announced
The source is a Gemini Apps Help article titled “Changes to Gemini model access and limits”. Three passages matter.
First, the timing: “Starting in October 2026, there will be changes to model availability for Gemini Apps when you use a personal account. These changes will start to take effect for users without an AI subscription on October 9th.” AI Plus subscribers “should receive an email that explains when these changes will take effect for you”. Google gives no date for AI Plus on the page.
Second, the model table. It lists three models, Flash-Lite, Flash and Pro, against four plans. The row for users without a plan reads “Auto”. Google explains: “Auto will be the default setting for users without a Google AI plan. Gemini will use auto model selection to send each prompt to the Gemini model that suits it best. Most prompts will go to Flash-Lite, our fastest model. Prompts that need deeper reasoning may go to Flash or Pro.”
Third, the fallback: “If smart model selection is turned off, chats for users without an AI plan will use Flash-Lite for all responses.”
Our reading: a free user can no longer pick Flash or Pro. You either let Gemini choose, and usually get Flash-Lite, or switch automatic selection off and get Flash-Lite every time. Technology outlets summarised this as “Flash-Lite only”; Google’s wording is slightly softer, because Auto can still route a hard prompt upwards, but you do not control when.
The page also adds effort levels: for each available model you can choose low, medium or high, and higher effort “will also use more of your limit”.
Before the change, Digital Trends reported on 3 October 2026, free personal accounts could use Gemini 3.6 Flash and had limited access to Gemini 3.1 Pro; those version numbers are from the press, not Google’s page. Deep Research, image generation, Gemini Live, Canvas and Gems are still listed under the free plan on Google’s subscriptions page, with the note that Deep Research “may be unavailable during periods of high demand” for free users.
The usage limits that already changed in May
The model change sits on top of an earlier one. Google’s help page says that from 17 May 2026 (24 July 2026 for users under 18), Gemini moved “to compute-based usage limits that will refresh every 5 hours until you reach your weekly limit”. Usage depends on prompt complexity, features used and chat length; media generation, Deep Research, the Pro model, extended thinking and Deep Think use the limit faster.
| Plan | Usage limit (Google’s wording) | Context window |
|---|---|---|
| Without a plan | Standard limits | 32k tokens |
| Google AI Plus | 2x higher than standard limits | 128k tokens |
| Google AI Pro | 4x higher than standard limits | 1 million tokens |
| Google AI Ultra | 5x or 20x higher than AI Pro, depending on subscription | 1 million tokens |
Google does not publish the “standard limit” as a number of prompts. The 32k context window is the figure that bites in practice: roughly a long report, so a free user who uploads a 40-page PDF will hit the ceiling.
What AI Plus and AI Pro keep
Google’s subscriptions page, which lets you select Nepal as your region, lists the plans like this on 30 October 2026.
| Plan | Price (USD per month) | Model access as listed | Other inclusions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | US$0 | “Access to our Flash-Lite model” | Image generation and editing, Deep Research, Gemini Live, Canvas, Gems, 15 GB storage |
| Google AI Plus | US$4.99 | “Access to our Flash model” | 2x usage limits, video generation, 200 Flow credits, Gemini in Gmail and Vids, 400 GB |
| Google AI Pro | US$19.99 | Gemini 4 Argon, Pro and Flash | 4x usage limits, 1,000 Flow credits, Gemini in Gmail, Docs and Vids, Antigravity entry limits, 5 TB |
| Google AI Ultra | From US$99.99 | Highest access to Gemini 4 Argon, Pro and Flash | 5x or 20x Pro limits, Project Genie, YouTube Premium in some countries, 20 TB and up |
Two points for a Nepali buyer. The Pro model is listed only under AI Pro and AI Ultra; AI Plus is the Flash plan. Press reports say AI Plus subscribers lose selectable Pro when their emailed date arrives, which matches the plan page, but Google’s help article does not spell this out, so keep the email. Second, all plans are billed in US dollars from Nepal; see our guide to dollar card fees and limits at Nepali banks. For a comparison of the two budget plans, see ChatGPT Plus price in Nepal.
Who in Nepal is affected most
- Students. Flash-Lite handles grammar fixes, summaries and simple explanations, but is weaker at multi-step reasoning, sourced essays and code, and the 32k context rules out pasting a thesis chapter.
- Small businesses. Product descriptions and Facebook posts are fine; analysing a sales spreadsheet or a long supplier contract is where the model and the limit get in the way.
- Freelancers who used free Pro access for client work. This group loses a tool: limited Pro access, as reported before the change, is gone from the menu.
- Work or school accounts. The help page covers personal accounts only; Workspace users are not described by it.
Free alternatives that still give a stronger model
The comparison below uses each company’s own description of its free tier. None needs a card to start.
| Free plan | Models on the free tier (as stated by the provider) | Notable free features | What is paid |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gemini (Google) | Flash-Lite by default via Auto; Flash or Pro only when Auto routes to them | Deep Research (may be unavailable at peak), image generation, Live, Canvas, Gems; 32k context | AI Plus US$4.99, AI Pro US$19.99 |
| Claude (Anthropic) | Sonnet and Haiku | Web search, file creation and code execution, memory, Artifacts, voice mode, up to 5 projects; limits reset on a rolling five-hour window | Pro US$20 a month or US$17 a month billed yearly; Max from US$100 |
| ChatGPT (OpenAI) | Free tier with a 27K context window on the compare table we read on 24 October 2026 | OpenAI’s help page describes unlimited everyday text chats for Free; voice mode included | Go US$8 (“may include ads”), Plus US$20, Pro from US$100 |
| Copilot (Microsoft) | Free Copilot chat; Microsoft’s page describes paid tiers as “higher usage than free” | Chat, image creation and visual assistance with free-tier usage caps | Microsoft 365 Personal US$9.99, Family US$12.99, Premium US$19.99 |
Our reading of the four pages: Claude Free is the strongest free offer for reasoning and writing, because Anthropic lists Sonnet, a mid-tier model, on the free plan along with web search and file creation, with the trade-off of a five-hour usage window and no published message count. ChatGPT Free is the most familiar and the only one with a US$8 step-up plan; its 27K context is close to Gemini’s 32k. Copilot Free is the easiest for Windows users, but Microsoft publishes no free-tier model name or context figure. Gemini Free remains the best for Google integration, since Drive, Gmail, Deep Research and image generation stay free; only the model behind the answers changed.
We compared the three assistants before this change in ChatGPT vs Claude vs Gemini; its Gemini free-tier conclusions are now out of date, the paid-plan comparison still holds.
How to check what you are actually getting
- Open gemini.google.com on your personal account and look at the model selector. “Auto” with no Flash or Pro option means the change has reached you.
- Ask a question that needs reasoning and note the answer.
- Turn smart model selection off in Settings and ask again; Google says you now get Flash-Lite every time.
- Run the same question on Claude Free and ChatGPT Free, and pick the tool that answers your real work best.
Should a Nepali user pay for AI Plus or AI Pro?
Our reading of the plan page: AI Plus at US$4.99 buys the Flash model, twice the free limits and a 128k context, which fixes the two problems most free users have, but not the Pro model. AI Pro at US$19.99 buys Pro, Gemini 4 Argon, 4x limits and the 1 million token context, and competes directly with Claude Pro and ChatGPT Plus at the same price.
If your work is mostly short text, do not pay: use Gemini Free for Google tasks and Claude Free or ChatGPT Free for harder questions. If you process long documents weekly inside Gmail and Drive, AI Plus is the cheapest fix. If you need the strongest model for client work, test AI Pro, Claude Pro and ChatGPT Plus on your own tasks before paying any of them in dollars.

Frequently asked questions
Is the Gemini free plan still available in Nepal?
Yes. Nepal is on Google’s supported countries list for Gemini Apps, and the subscriptions page offers the US$0 plan with Nepal selected. What changed is the model behind the free plan, not its availability.
Can I still choose the Flash or Pro model for free?
No. Google’s help page says Auto is the default for users without a plan and that turning smart model selection off gives Flash-Lite for all responses. Auto may route a demanding prompt to Flash or Pro, but you cannot select them.
Does this change affect the Gemini API or Google AI Studio?
Google’s help article covers Gemini Apps on personal accounts. It does not mention the API or AI Studio, so we cannot say from Google’s page that they changed. Developers should check the Gemini API pricing page separately.
Will my Google AI Plus plan lose the Pro model?
Google’s help page says AI Plus subscribers will get an email with their date, and the subscriptions page lists AI Plus with “Access to our Flash model” and Pro under AI Pro and Ultra only. Press reports say Plus loses selectable Pro. Treat Google’s email as the final word.
Conclusion
The Gemini free plan in Nepal still exists and still includes Deep Research, image generation and Google app integration, but from 9 October 2026 it runs on Flash-Lite by default, with a 32k context window and standard compute-based limits, according to Google’s own help pages. Free users can no longer choose Flash or Pro. AI Plus at US$4.99 restores the Flash model and a 128k context; AI Pro at US$19.99 restores Pro. For anyone not ready to pay in dollars, Claude Free lists a mid-tier model on its free plan and ChatGPT Free is a close substitute, so the practical answer for most students and small businesses in Nepal is to keep Gemini for Google tasks and use a second free assistant for the hard questions.
