PayPal in Nepal is half available. You can open a PayPal account from Nepal and use it to pay online or send money. What PayPal’s Nepal website does not offer is the part most people want: a way to request money or accept payments from clients.
That one fact answers most questions about PayPal in Nepal. The rest of this page shows where it comes from, what you can still do with the account, and the legal ways to get paid from abroad.

What PayPal’s own Nepal site shows
We compared PayPal’s Nepal site with its India site on the same day. The difference is in the menu.
| PayPal Nepal site | PayPal India site | |
|---|---|---|
| Personal menu | Send payments, Pay securely | Send and request payments, Pay securely |
| Business menu | None | Accept payments, invoicing, payment links, checkout |
| Opening line | Explore what PayPal offers in your location | A platform for business |
Nepal is on PayPal’s worldwide list of countries. But the Nepal site offers paying and sending only. The words “request” and “accept payments” appear on the India site and not on the Nepal one.
The user agreement for Nepal says the same thing in legal language. PayPal’s services let you send payments and, where available, receive them. It adds that availability varies by country and that you can see what is offered in yours by logging in to your account.
What you can do with a PayPal account in Nepal
- Pay on foreign websites that accept PayPal, after adding a payment card.
- Send money to another PayPal account.
- Use buyer protection on eligible purchases, as described on the site.
The card you add has to be one that can pay in foreign currency. From Nepal that means a bank-issued dollar card, with its limit of US$500 a year for an ordinary individual. Our guide to dollar card fees and limits explains the rule.
On cost, PayPal’s fee page for Nepal says paying for a purchase is free unless a currency conversion is involved. A conversion fee applies when one is.
What you cannot do
- Request money from a client or a friend.
- Accept PayPal on a Nepali shop, website or invoice.
- Receive a freelance payment into a Nepal-registered account.
For a freelancer, designer or exporter in Nepal this is the whole point of PayPal, and it is the part that is missing.
Will PayPal launch receiving in Nepal?
Nobody has announced a date. In 2024 Nepali technology media reported that Nepal Rastra Bank and Fonepay were working toward an arrangement to bring PayPal’s receiving service to Nepal. As of 13 October 2026, PayPal’s own Nepal site still shows no receiving or business features.
Treat any “PayPal is launching next month” post with caution until PayPal or Nepal Rastra Bank says so on their own channels. We will update this page when either does.
The workarounds people use, and why they are risky
Three shortcuts circulate in freelancer groups. All of them can cost you the money.
- Opening an account with a foreign address. PayPal’s user agreement lists giving false, inaccurate or misleading information as a restricted activity. An account opened that way can be limited, with the balance held.
- Using a relative’s account abroad. The money legally belongs to the account holder. It then has to reach you some other way, and that leg is where foreign exchange rules get broken.
- Paying a “PayPal exchanger”. You hand a stranger your client’s payment and hope to receive rupees. There is no protection if they disappear.
There is a tax angle too. Income that arrives through a bank can be shown, taxed correctly and used as proof for a higher dollar card limit. Income that arrives through someone’s cousin cannot.
Legal ways to receive money from abroad in Nepal
The reliable route is a bank channel.
| Method | Good for | Our guide |
|---|---|---|
| Bank wire (SWIFT) to your account | Larger, occasional payments | SWIFT transfer charges |
| Foreign currency account | Regular foreign income you want to keep in dollars | Foreign currency account |
| Payment platforms that pay out to Nepali banks | Freelance marketplaces and small invoices | Receive international payment |
Before you quote a client, read the freelancer payment and tax guide. It covers how such income is taxed and what paperwork to keep. When a client insists on PayPal, the practical answer is to offer a bank transfer or an invoice through a platform that settles to a Nepali bank.

Frequently asked questions
Is PayPal available in Nepal in 2026?
Partly. PayPal has a Nepal site and lets you open an account to pay and send money. Its Nepal site offers no feature to request or accept payments.
Can I receive money through PayPal in Nepal?
PayPal’s Nepal site does not offer receiving. Its user agreement says receiving is provided where available and that availability varies by country.
Can I create a PayPal account in Nepal?
Yes. Sign up on paypal.com/np with your real details and add a card that can pay in foreign currency.
Can I link my Nepali bank card to PayPal?
A rupee debit card cannot pay in foreign currency. A bank-issued dollar card is the instrument meant for foreign online payments.
Is it legal to use a PayPal account with a foreign address from Nepal?
PayPal’s user agreement treats false or inaccurate information as a restricted activity, and accounts can be limited for it. It also leaves you without a lawful way to bring the money home.
What is the best PayPal alternative for freelancers in Nepal?
A bank transfer into your own account, or a payment platform that settles to a Nepali bank. Both leave a record you can use for tax and for a higher dollar card limit.
Conclusion
PayPal in Nepal lets you spend and send, not receive. That has not changed as of October 2026, and PayPal’s own Nepal site is the evidence. If you only need to pay a foreign website, a PayPal account funded by your dollar card works within the US$500 yearly limit.
If you need to get paid, skip the workarounds. Use a bank channel, keep the records, and let the income work for you at tax time.
