As of 13 October 2026 (27 Asoj 2083). Based on the Department of Passports’ website and its online application portal, both read on that date. We looked at the status screen but did not submit a search.
A passport status check in Nepal is done in one of two places: the “Check application status” option on the Department of Passports’ online portal, or the Department’s mobile app, Nepal ePassport. The office does not give status by phone. The Department says so itself.
This page covers both ways to track an application, what a rejection notice means, and the second question people ask most: what to do when a passport is lost, stolen or damaged, in Nepal or abroad.
Quick answers
| Question | Answer from the Department of Passports |
|---|---|
| Where to check status | online.nepalpassport.gov.np, “Check application status”, or the Nepal ePassport app |
| What you enter on the portal | Application ID and date of birth in AD, plus a captcha |
| How you are told it is ready | Email or SMS to the contact on your form |
| If the passport is lost | Apply to have it cancelled, then apply again as for a new passport |
| Police report or newspaper notice | Not required |
| Fee for a lost or damaged passport at the Department | Rs 17,000 for 34 pages, Rs 25,000 for 66 pages |
| If a lost passport is found later | Do not travel on it. Have it cancelled |
How to check passport status online
On the portal
- Open the Department’s application portal, linked from nepalpassport.gov.np as the page for applying for an e-passport.
- Choose Check application status.
- Enter your Application ID and your date of birth in AD.
- Type the captcha and search.
The Application ID is on the form you downloaded after submitting. The same screen lets you reprint that form if you have lost it.
If you created an account on the portal, sign in instead. The portal says an account lets you track submitted applications, manage appointments and receive updates.
In the app
The Department’s answer to “how do I know whether my passport is ready” points to the Nepal ePassport app on Google Play and the App Store. Install it and follow the steps it shows.
The same answer explains why the phone line will not help: because applicants can check for themselves, the office does not give status information.
What the messages mean
| What you receive | What to do |
|---|---|
| Email or SMS that the passport is ready | Go to the office where you applied, with your documents |
| Email or SMS that the application was rejected | Contact the enrolment centre where you applied and resubmit with the papers it asks for |
| Nothing yet | Compare the days passed with the time for your office, below |
A rejection is not the end. The Department says a resubmission normally does not need a new photo, so the process can continue even if you cannot attend again in person.
How long before you worry
| Where you applied | Time the Department gives |
|---|---|
| Department of Passports, Kathmandu | Within 2 working days |
| District or Area Administration Office | 10 to 30 days on one page, 15 to 45 days on another |
| Mission abroad | 15 to 30 days on one page, up to 2 months on another |
If the longer figure has passed, contact the centre where you applied. The Department’s general contacts are info@nepalpassport.gov.np and +977 1 5970330.
Collecting the passport
Take the application form, your old passport if you had one, your citizenship certificate and the fee receipt. You collect it yourself. A child’s passport is collected by the mother or father. A relative can collect yours with your written authority and their own citizenship or passport.
If your passport is lost or stolen
The Department’s instructions are short.
- Have it cancelled. Apply at the nearest application centre, with proof of your identity, to cancel the lost passport. This stops misuse.
- Apply for a replacement. Fill the pre-enrolment form again and choose the option for a lost or stolen passport. The process is the same as for a new passport.
- Pay the replacement fee.
Two things you do not need: the Department says there is no requirement to publish a notice in a newspaper and no requirement for a police report. You can apply directly.
The Department reports cancelled passports to Interpol.
No copy of the lost passport?
If you have no copy, or the copy cannot be read, contact the Department or the centre where you applied. They can give you the details of that passport from their records.
Our guide to blocking a SIM when a phone is lost is worth reading too, since a passport and a phone often go missing together.
Fee for a lost or damaged passport
| Type | 34 pages | 66 pages |
|---|---|---|
| Lost or damaged | Rs 17,000 | Rs 25,000 |
| Lost or damaged, child under 10 | Rs 14,500 | Rs 19,500 |
| Ordinary new or renewal, for comparison | Rs 12,000 | Rs 20,000 |
These are the figures on the Department’s fee page, headed as the Department’s fee. The Department also says that applying there costs Rs 7,000 more than the district fee for 34 pages and Rs 10,000 more for 66 pages, so the district amount is lower. Ask your office for its figure.
“Damaged” on the fee page covers a passport with torn or defaced pages, or one whose booklet cannot be used for any other reason.
If you find the passport afterwards
Do not use it. The Department’s homepage carries this notice: a passport reported as lost or stolen must not be used for travel, even if it is later recovered.
Contact the registration centre at once and have the found passport cancelled. Because the loss is passed on through Interpol, travelling on that passport can lead to action under the immigration rules of the country you enter.
If your passport is lost abroad
- Apply at the Nepali embassy or consulate for the country you are in, or the mission responsible for it.
- You cannot have a replacement made in Nepal through a relative. The Department says this is not possible.
- If you must travel before the e-passport arrives, the mission can issue a temporary passport. It is handwritten, and the Department says it generally cannot be used to visit other countries, though it can be used to return to Nepal and, in some countries, to apply for a visa.
- If you only need to get home, the Department mentions a one-way travel document for returning to Nepal.
- Fees and steps differ by mission, so ask the mission itself.
If the details in your passport are wrong
| Whose mistake | Result |
|---|---|
| The Department, mission or office | A new passport is issued without a fee |
| The applicant | A new application at the fee for a new passport |
Before the passport is printed, a mistake can still be handled at the counter or by cancelling the application. Our guide to the e-passport online form explains the cut-off points. If your passport is simply running out, see passport renewal in Nepal.
Keep these three things
- A scan of the data page, stored somewhere other than your phone.
- The Application ID from your form, until the passport is in your hand.
- The passport number and issue date, written down separately when you travel.

Frequently asked questions
How can I check my passport status in Nepal?
Use “Check application status” on the Department of Passports’ online portal with your Application ID and date of birth in AD, or the Nepal ePassport mobile app.
Can I call the office to ask about my passport?
The Department says status is not given by the office because applicants can check it themselves. You are told by email or SMS when the passport is ready or if it is rejected.
What should I do if my passport is lost in Nepal?
Apply at the nearest application centre to cancel it, then fill the online form again as a lost or stolen replacement and follow the same steps as for a new passport.
Do I need a police report for a lost passport?
No. The Department says neither a police report nor a newspaper notice is required.
How much does a replacement for a lost passport cost?
At the Department of Passports, Rs 17,000 for 34 pages and Rs 25,000 for 66 pages.
Can I use my old passport if I find it later?
No. A passport reported lost must not be used for travel even if it is recovered. Have it cancelled.
Conclusion
A passport status check in Nepal takes your Application ID and date of birth on the Department’s portal, or the Nepal ePassport app. The office will not tell you by phone, but it will send an email or SMS when the passport is ready or if something is wrong.
If a passport is lost, cancel it first and then apply again. No police report is needed, the fee is higher than for a renewal, and a passport found later must never be used.
