NTC Rs 4,999 Internet Plan: Is Nepal Telecom’s 30 Mbps Yearly NT Fiber Worth It?

NTC Rs 4,999 internet plan: 30 Mbps fiber for a year, about Rs 417 a month, Rs 500 installation fee reported waived, not yet on the NTC tariff page as of 28 October 2026

As of 28 October 2026 (11 Kartik 2083). Plan details are from Nepal Telecom’s announcement of 16 October as reported by Ratopati, Radio Nepal and Nepalitelecom, and from Nepal Telecom’s statement of 17 October as reported by Nepalitelecom. Regular prices are from Nepal Telecom’s own FTTH tariff page, checked on 28 October. The Rs 4,999 plan was still not listed on that tariff page on this date, so confirm the details when Nepal Telecom calls you.

The NTC 4999 internet plan is the cheapest home fiber deal in Nepal right now: 30 Mbps for a whole year at Rs 4,999. That works out to about Rs 417 a month (our calculation), with no installation charge reported. After Prime Minister Balen Shah shared Nepal Telecom’s banner on Facebook, demand jumped so fast that the 198 hotline could not keep up.

But there are questions worth asking before you sign up. Is it for everyone or only students? Why did the regulator’s name come up? Is 30 Mbps enough for your home? This guide answers each one with what is confirmed and what is not.

What you get for Rs 4,999

According to Ratopati’s report of Nepal Telecom’s 16 October announcement, the plan gives 30 Mbps internet at an annual fee of Rs 4,999. Several outlets, including Radio Nepal, report that the Rs 500 installation fee is waived and the plan is valid for 12 months.

Some details were not stated in any announcement we found:

  • Router (CPE): Nepal Telecom’s tariff page says CPE is free on its regular packages, but no source says which router comes with this plan. Ask on the call.
  • Landline and TV: None reported. The cheaper price suggests internet only. The bundled telephone and NTTV packs on the tariff page cost more.
  • Mobile data bonus: Ratopati mentions 800 MB to 1,000 MB of daily mobile data for annual customers, but in the paragraph about the higher packages. It is unclear whether the Rs 4,999 plan gets any bonus.

So the confirmed core is simple: 30 Mbps fiber, one year, Rs 4,999, no installation fee. Treat everything else as “ask before you pay”.

Who can buy it: students only or everyone?

This is the most confusing part, so here is exactly what each source says.

  • Nepalitelecom (16 October): the plan was earlier launched as a student package and now appears to be available for all.
  • Nepalitelecom’s report of Nepal Telecom’s statement (17 October): Nepal Telecom said the Rs 4,999 package is part of an offer it had already communicated to the Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA) as “a student-focused offer”.
  • No source we found lists a student ID or any document requirement.

Our reading: if you are not a student, apply anyway, but ask clearly on the call whether the 30 Mbps Rs 4,999 plan is available to you, and whether any ID is needed. Do not pay until the office confirms the plan name and price in writing or on your receipt.

The NTA question: is the plan legal?

In mid-October, NTA issued a press release about internet service providers selling packages against their licence conditions, and reportedly fined 14 ISPs. Some media reports tied this to Nepal Telecom’s 30 Mbps plan and said it was not authorised.

Nepal Telecom responded with a statement, reported by Nepalitelecom on 17 October. It said the package is “completely legitimate and falls within the existing rules and regulations of NTA”, that it had informed the regulator when it launched the offer, and that it is communicating with NTA to get approval for the packages it runs.

For a customer, the practical risk is small: you pay Nepal Telecom, a government-owned company, and get a receipt. But this is also why the plan may not appear on the tariff page yet, and why the eligibility wording may change. Rs 4,999 vs Nepal Telecom’s other yearly plans

Here is how the offer compares with plans that are listed on Nepal Telecom’s own tariff page.

PlanYearly pricePer month (our calculation)Notes
30 Mbps offerRs 4,999About Rs 417Not yet on tariff page; installation waived as reported
50 Mbps regularRs 8,499About Rs 708Rs 500 installation on single-year plans
100 Mbps Wi-Fi 6 festive offerRs 11,499About Rs 958Internet + telephone; offer 2083/06/30 to 2083/07/30
150 Mbps Wi-Fi 6 festive offerRs 12,999About Rs 1,083Internet + telephone
200 Mbps Wi-Fi 6 festive offerRs 16,499About Rs 1,375Internet + telephone

Tariff page prices are inclusive of taxes, according to Nepal Telecom. The jump from 30 Mbps to 50 Mbps costs Rs 3,500 more a year. The jump to 100 Mbps Wi-Fi 6 costs Rs 6,500 more but more than triples the speed and adds a Wi-Fi 6 router and phone line.

Is 30 Mbps enough for your home?

Speed needs depend on how many people use the internet at the same time. The figures below are rough guides based on streaming services’ published recommendations (Netflix, for example, suggests about 5 Mbps for HD and 15 Mbps for 4K).

UseRough speed needed per deviceWorks on 30 Mbps?
Browsing, Facebook, WhatsApp1 to 3 MbpsYes, easily
HD video on YouTube or NetTVAbout 5 MbpsYes, several at once
4K videoAbout 15 Mbps or moreOne stream, with little left over
Zoom or Google Meet class2 to 4 MbpsYes, two or three at once
Online gamingLow speed, but needs stable pingYes, if the connection is stable
Large uploads (YouTube creators, CCTV cloud backup)Depends on upload speedAsk about upload speed

Good fit: students, couples, small families of three or four, renters, and home offices with one person on video calls.

Consider 100 Mbps if: five or more people stream at the same time, you watch 4K, you run CCTV with cloud backup, or several people work from home.

One more practical point: your Wi-Fi often limits speed more than the plan does. A router in the corner of a concrete house will not give 30 Mbps to the far bedroom. Put the router in a central, open spot.

How to apply for the Rs 4,999 plan

  1. Apply online on Nepal Telecom’s portal, complain.ntc.net.np: verify your mobile number with OTP, choose New Demand, then Data, pick the nearest Telecom office and submit. Our step-by-step guide to NTC fiber online apply shows each screen.
  2. Or call 198, Nepal Telecom’s NT Fiber line. It has been very busy since the offer, so try early morning or late evening.
  3. Or visit your nearest Telecom office with your citizenship or national ID card.
  4. When the office calls, confirm the plan name, price, router and whether any ID is needed.
  5. Pay only to Nepal Telecom, at the office or through official channels, and keep the receipt.

Questions to ask on the call

  • Is the 30 Mbps Rs 4,999 yearly plan available for me, and is any student ID needed?
  • Is installation free, and is the router included or a deposit?
  • Is there a mobile data bonus with this plan?
  • When can the team install it at my address?
  • After 12 months, what will renewal cost?

That last question matters. The offer price is for the first year. No source we found says the renewal price.

Why this plan matters

Over the past months, private ISPs dropped many small, cheap packages, and prices became a public complaint. Nepal Telecom’s Rs 4,999 plan gives price-sensitive households a fiber option again, and the Prime Minister’s post turned it into a national talking point.

It is also a reminder that “cheap” is relative. Rs 4,999 a year is good value for basic household use. It is not the best deal for a large family that streams all evening. Choose by how you actually use the internet.

Is the Rs 4,999 plan only for students?

Is the NTC Rs 4,999 plan approved by NTA?
