As of 13 October 2026 (27 Asoj 2083). Every fee, document and time on this page is from the Department of Passports’ own website, read on that date. Where its pages differ from each other, we say so.
The e-passport Nepal online form is the pre-enrolment form on the Department of Passports’ portal. You fill it at home, choose where and when you will appear, and then go to that office once to have the form checked, pay the fee and give your photo and fingerprints. The passport comes later, to the same office.
The form itself is free to fill. The cost is the passport fee, which depends on the number of pages and on whether you apply in your district or at the Department in Kathmandu.
Quick answers
| Question | Answer from the Department of Passports |
|---|---|
| Where is the form | online.nepalpassport.gov.np, linked from nepalpassport.gov.np |
| Where to appear | The District or Area Administration Office that issued your citizenship, or the Department at Tripureshwor |
| Fee at the Department, 34 pages | Rs 12,000 |
| Fee at the Department, 66 pages | Rs 20,000 |
| Time at the Department | Within 2 working days |
| Time in the districts | 10 to 30 days on one page, 15 to 45 days on another |
| Photo | Taken at the office. Do not bring one |
| National ID | Compulsory for applicants aged 16 and over applying in Nepal |
Where to apply
| Where | Service | Who can use it |
|---|---|---|
| District or Area Administration Office | Regular only | People whose citizenship or minor identity card was issued there, or who have migrated to that district |
| Department of Passports, Tripureshwor, Kathmandu | Fast service only | Anyone, from any district |
| Nepali embassy or consulate | Regular only | Nepalis living abroad |
The Department says the offices in the districts and the missions abroad do not offer fast service, and that the Department itself does not offer the regular one.
Passport fee
The Department’s fee page gives these figures.
| Type | 34 pages | 66 pages |
|---|---|---|
| New or renewal | Rs 12,000 | Rs 20,000 |
| New or renewal, child under 10 | Rs 9,500 | Rs 14,500 |
| Lost or damaged | Rs 17,000 | Rs 25,000 |
| Lost or damaged, child under 10 | Rs 14,500 | Rs 19,500 |
| Office’s own error | Free | Free |
The table is headed as the Department’s fee. On its “where to apply” page the Department also says that applying there costs Rs 7,000 more than the district fee for 34 pages and Rs 10,000 more for 66 pages.
Putting the two statements together, an ordinary new or renewed passport in the districts works out at Rs 5,000 for 34 pages and Rs 10,000 for 66 pages. That subtraction is ours. Confirm the amount at your District Administration Office before you pay.
The fee is paid at the bank the office names, or by the online or digital payment it accepts. Missions abroad set their own arrangements.
34 pages or 66?
The Department’s advice is to choose 66 pages only if you travel often and expect to run out of pages. It adds that a 66-page passport does not improve the chance of getting a visa. Both are equally valid.

At the office: three counters
- Verification. Staff check the form against your documents.
- Payment. You pay the fee, if you have not already.
- Enrolment. Your photo is taken and your fingerprints recorded.
You do not bring a photo. The only exception the Department lists is a newborn or a child under five who cannot sit still for the camera.
For the photo, small everyday jewellery is allowed if it does not shine or cover the face. Party jewellery comes off. The Department advises against heavy makeup and suggests not wearing a tika.
If you find a mistake
| When you notice | What can be done |
|---|---|
| After submitting the form, before the visit | Ask the staff at verification or enrolment to correct it |
| At the counter, before you sign | Check the corrected details, then sign |
| After you sign and approve | It can no longer be corrected. The process can be cancelled before printing and started again |
| After the passport is printed | A new application and a new fee, if the mistake was yours. Free if it was the office’s |
An appointment cannot be changed online. If you cannot attend, contact the office and follow what it tells you.
How long it takes
| Where you apply | Time the Department gives |
|---|---|
| Department of Passports | Within 2 working days |
| District or Area Administration Office | 10 to 30 days on the “where to apply” page; 15 to 45 days on the questions page |
| Mission abroad | 15 days to 2 months |
The Department explains that the time in a district depends on its distance from Kathmandu and on transport.
Collecting the passport
You are told by email or SMS when it is ready. Collect it from the office where you applied, and take:
- the application form;
- your old passport, unless this is your first or the old one was lost;
- your citizenship certificate;
- the fee receipt.
You must collect it yourself. A child’s passport is collected by the mother or father. If you truly cannot go, a relative can collect it with your written authority and their own citizenship or passport. The Department says collection takes 10 to 15 minutes.
If you will use the passport for study or work abroad, your certificates may need attesting next. See our guide to consular e-attestation.
