EDV Result Check: Confirmation Number, Entrant Status Check and What to Do If You Are Selected

Card showing what is needed for an EDV result check, the court-ordered DV-2027 result deadline, the US$330 diversity visa fee and the 30 September issuance deadline.

Update, 1 November 2026: the EDV form is not open. On 29 October the US Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals granted the government’s request to pause the order that would have opened DV-2027 registration by 1 November. No opening date exists now. Check only dvprogram.state.gov, and treat any “EDV is open” post as fake. Read what happened.

As of 27 October 2026 (10 Kartik 2083). Checked: the State Department’s DV-2026 instructions and two final rules in the Federal Register, the US Embassy Kathmandu immigrant visa instructions (updated 12 February 2026), the court timeline in our DV-2027 guide, and law firm and news reports. The State Department’s own websites blocked our automated check, so open them yourself before acting.

An EDV result check takes about two minutes, and it can only be done in one place: Entrant Status Check on dvprogram.state.gov. You need three things: your confirmation number, your last name and your year of birth. No letter, email, SMS or agent will tell you the result. This guide explains where results stand for the delayed DV-2027 lottery, how to recover a lost confirmation number, what “selected” really means, and the steps a selected applicant in Nepal takes up to the interview at the US Embassy in Kathmandu.

How to do the EDV result check on Entrant Status Check

The State Department’s instructions say entrants must return to dvprogram.state.gov, click Entrant Status Check and enter their unique confirmation number and personal information. The status check page asks for the confirmation number, the last name and the year of birth of the person who entered.

  1. Open a browser and type dvprogram.state.gov yourself. Do not follow a link from Facebook, WhatsApp or an email.
  2. Click Entrant Status Check.
  3. Enter your confirmation number exactly as shown on your confirmation page. It is 16 characters long, and the first four characters are the programme year.
  4. Enter your last name exactly as you typed it on the entry form.
  5. Enter your year of birth, four digits.
  6. Submit and read the result screen. If you are selected, the page gives further instructions, including information about fees.
  7. Take a screenshot or print the page, and note the date you checked.

If the system cannot find your entry, check the spelling of your last name, then the programme year in the first four characters of the number.

Check it yourself rather than relying on someone else, as the instructions advise. Entrants who are not selected are also told only through Entrant Status Check.

When will the EDV result come?

In a normal year, Entrant Status Check opens in early May, about six months after the entry period closes. For DV-2026, the instructions said it would be available from 4 May 2025 through at least 30 September 2026.

This year is not normal. DV-2027 registration was deferred in November 2025 and has not opened. On 14 October 2026 a US federal judge ordered the State Department to run it. As reported by Nepyork on 17 October, the amended order requires the Department to:

Court deadline (US Eastern time)What must happen
Midnight, 29 October 2026Announce the registration period
Midnight, 1 November 2026Open registration
30 days from openingKeep registration open
Midnight, 3 December 2026Notify selected entrants

A lower court had set these deadlines, but the Ninth Circuit paused that order on 29 October 2026. No DV-2027 registration has opened, so there is no result to check yet. Our DV-2027 court order guide tracks each step.

For DV-2028, no dates have been announced at all. Our EDV 2028 opening date guide will be updated when they are.

If an entry period is announced later, the State Department will give the result date. Check dvprogram.state.gov rather than waiting for news.

Lost your EDV confirmation number? How to get it back

Without the confirmation number you cannot check the result. The DV-2026 instructions say a tool in Entrant Status Check lets you retrieve the number through the email address you used when you entered, after you give certain personal information to confirm your identity.

  1. Go to dvprogram.state.gov and open Entrant Status Check.
  2. Click Forgot Confirmation Number.
  3. Choose the programme year.
  4. Enter the primary entrant’s name and date of birth exactly as on the entry, and the email address used on the entry.
  5. Open that email inbox to receive the number.

This is why the email address on your entry matters. If an agent typed his own email, or an address you cannot open, the retrieval tool sends the number to him, not to you.

There is no other route. The instructions state that US embassies and consulates and the Kentucky Consular Center cannot check your status or give you your confirmation number, other than through this tool. A March 2026 State Department rule adds that the Department will not replace the number.

Agents who keep your confirmation number

The State Department describes a common fraud: someone enters people in the lottery, keeps the confirmation number and later demands money for it. In one case described in the March 2026 rule, a fraud ring demanded up to US$15,000 from selectees for their numbers. If someone fills your entry, sit with them, make sure the email is yours, and take the confirmation page with you. Our guide on how to verify a fake notice covers similar tricks.

What “selected” means in an EDV result check

A “selected” result is not a visa. The DV-2026 instructions say being randomly chosen “does not guarantee” a visa, or even the chance to apply for one or get an interview. Selection only means you may be eligible to apply.

The reason is simple. The Department selects more people than there are visas. For DV-2026, 55,000 diversity visas were available, and more than 55,000 people were selected to allow for those who do not qualify or do not continue. When the visas run out, the programme ends for that year, even if your case is not finished.

What the State Department will never do:

  • Send a letter or email saying you have won.
  • Ask you to send money by post, Western Union or a similar service (unless you are adjusting status inside the US).
  • Give out a list of winners through an embassy.

Any message that says “Congratulations, you are selected, pay now” is not from the US government. Official emails, if any, only tell you to go to Entrant Status Check.

If you are selected: next steps from official sources

The DV-2027 instructions have not been published. The steps below come from the last published instructions (DV-2026), the State Department’s DV-2026 infographic and the US Embassy Kathmandu instructions. They may change for DV-2027.

Step 1: Submit the DS-260

The State Department’s DV-2026 infographic says selectees follow the instructions on the selectee page and submit the DS-260, the Online Immigrant Visa and Alien Registration Application, for themselves and each accompanying family member. It also says no supporting documents are required at this stage.

Answer carefully: the DS-260 asks about eligibility, including criminal and security questions. To correct a submitted DS-260, the embassy says to email the consular section to reopen it.

Step 2: Watch your case number and the Visa Bulletin

Within each region, the first entry drawn becomes the first case registered, the second becomes the second, and so on. That order decides when your case can move. Each month the State Department’s Visa Bulletin publishes the diversity visa “rank cut-offs” for each region. Only cases with numbers below the cut-off can be scheduled that month.

Nepal is in the Asia region. US law firms that track the bulletin reported that in 2026 Nepal had its own cut-off, lower than the one for the rest of Asia. Our reading: a Nepali selectee with a high number may wait months, and may never become current. Read the bulletin yourself each month on travel.state.gov.

Step 3: Interview notice through Entrant Status Check

When your case is scheduled, you are told through Entrant Status Check, four to six weeks before the appointment, according to the DV-2026 instructions. Any email you receive will only tell you to log in there.

Step 4: Prepare the US Embassy Kathmandu steps

The embassy’s immigrant visa instructions list these steps after you receive an interview date:

  1. Register online at ustraveldocs.com/np, so your passport and documents can be returned after the interview.
  2. Create a profile and upload your documents in CEAC (ceac.state.gov).
  3. Complete the pre-interview checklist.
  4. Read the interview guidelines.
  5. Book and attend the medical exam.

Step 5: Gather documents

From the embassy’s pre-interview checklist, the items that apply to most DV applicants are:

DocumentNote from the checklist
PassportValid six months beyond your intended entry to the US, plus a copy of the bio page
PhotosTwo colour photos per applicant, 5 cm x 5 cm
DS-260 confirmation pageFrom ceac.state.gov
Birth certificateOriginal and a photocopy; also for all children of the principal applicant
Marriage certificateIf married; divorce or death certificate for earlier marriages
Police certificateFor applicants older than 16, under the rules on the checklist
Medical resultsSealed envelope, if the doctor gives one
Court or military recordsOnly if they apply to you

Documents not in English or Nepali need a certified English translation. A DV principal applicant must also prove the education or work experience claimed (the DV-2026 instructions required at least a completed 12-year school course, or two years of qualifying work experience in the past five years). Our guide to translation and attestation of Nepali certificates explains how to prepare certificates.

Step 6: Medical exam with the embassy’s panel physician

Every immigrant visa applicant needs a medical exam, and the embassy accepts results only from its approved physician. As of the February 2026 instructions, that is the IOM Migration Health Assessment Center (MHAC) at Lazimpat Sadak, Panipokhari, Kathmandu, open Monday to Friday, 08:00 to 17:00, except national holidays.

Age groupExam fee listed by the embassy
Below 2 yearsUS$65
2 to 14 yearsUS$130
15 to 17 yearsUS$88
18 to 24 yearsUS$123
25 to 44 yearsUS$93
45 and olderUS$88

The fee is paid to the physician in US dollars or Nepali rupees at IOM’s monthly rate. Bring your interview letter, passport, three passport-size colour photos, immunisation records, earlier chest X-rays if any, records of chronic illness, and the DS-260 confirmation page. Reports are usually ready the next working day from 3 pm to 5 pm. Do not open a sealed envelope; take it to the interview.

Step 7: Pay the fee and attend the interview

The diversity visa application fee is US$330 per applicant. The State Department’s fee rule of September 2025 kept it at that amount and added the separate US$1 entry fee. The DV-2026 instructions say DV fees are paid in person to the consular cashier at the embassy at the time of the interview. The Kathmandu instructions say fees may be paid in cash in US dollars or the Nepali rupee equivalent, and are not refunded if you are found ineligible. Confirm the current figure on the travel.state.gov fees page before you go.

The interview is at the US Embassy in Maharajgunj, Kathmandu. Attorneys cannot come into the interview.

The 30 September deadline

Every diversity visa must be issued by 30 September, the last day of the US fiscal year, or until the visas run out, whichever is earlier. The instructions say that under no circumstances can a DV be issued after this date, and benefits do not carry over to the next year. Family members must also get their visas by then.

For DV-2027, that would be 30 September 2027. If results come in early December 2026, selectees would have about ten months instead of the usual sixteen or so (our calculation from the DV-2026 dates). Submit the DS-260 early.

One more caution. In 2026, diversity visa issuance was paused and later affected by court rulings, as our EDV 2028 guide explains. Read the State Department’s current diversity visa guidance before you spend on medicals or travel.

Frequently asked questions

Can I do the EDV result check without the confirmation number?

No. You must use the “Forgot Confirmation Number” tool on dvprogram.state.gov, which sends the number to the email address used on the entry. Embassies cannot look it up for you.

When can I check the DV-2027 result?

There is no DV-2027 result date. The order that set 3 December 2026 was paused on 29 October, and registration has not opened. Check dvprogram.state.gov for any announcement.

I got an email saying I won the DV lottery. Is it real?

No. The US government does not notify winners by email or letter. Only Entrant Status Check shows your result.

If I am selected, is my green card certain?

No. More people are selected than there are visas. You must become current in the Visa Bulletin, qualify at the interview, and get the visa before 30 September.

How much does a selected applicant pay?

The diversity visa application fee is US$330 per person, paid at the embassy. The medical exam is extra, from US$65 to US$130 depending on age, paid to IOM in Kathmandu.

Conclusion

An EDV result check is free and needs only your confirmation number, last name and year of birth at dvprogram.state.gov. Keep the confirmation page and access to the email you entered with. DV-2027 registration has not opened, so no result date exists yet. If you are selected, treat it as permission to apply: submit the DS-260 early, watch the Visa Bulletin, prepare your documents and medical, and remember the 30 September deadline.
