What Happens to Your SSF Money When You Leave a Job? Lump Sum, Pension & SSN Continuity

What happens to SSF money after leaving job in Nepal lump sum and pension pots explained

Last updated: July 2026 (Shrawan 2083). Settlement rules follow current SSF procedures — confirm your case on ssf.gov.np or at an SSF office.

Job छोड्दै हुनुहुन्छ — resignation, better offer, or heading abroad? The first money question is always the same: SSF मा जम्मा भएको पैसा के हुन्छ? The answer is better than most people think, because your SSF money sits in two different pots with two different rules. Here’s exactly what happens to each when you leave a job.

Your SSF Money = Two Pots

PotRate (of basic salary)What Happens When You Leave
Retirement Benefit Scheme8.33% (+ voluntary additions + transferred amounts)Lump sum payable when employment ends
Pension Scheme20%Stays invested — becomes your monthly pension after age 60

So “job छोडेपछि पैसा डुब्छ” is a myth. The 8.33% pot can come to you as cash; the 20% pot keeps compounding toward your pension (the ÷160 formula).

Scenario 1: Switching to Another SSF-Registered Employer

The smoothest case. Your SSN (Social Security Number) is permanent — your new employer contributes to the same account, and your contribution months keep accumulating toward the 180-month pension threshold. Nothing to withdraw, nothing to transfer manually. Just give your SSN to the new HR (don’t have it handy? Here’s how to find your SSN).

Smart move: in the gap between jobs, leave the money untouched — continuity toward 180 months is worth more than a small lump sum now.

Scenario 2: Leaving Employment (Business, Break, or Retirement)

  • 8.33% retirement benefit: claimable as a lump sum at employment end. File through the SSF portal/office with your documents.
  • 20% pension pot: waits for age 60 + 180 months. If you later become self-employed and continue contributing, the same account keeps growing.

Scenario 3: Going Abroad for Work

Don’t cash out — continue contributing from abroad under the foreign-employment provision (from ~Rs 2,596/month at current minimums). Your family in Nepal keeps medical coverage and your pension clock keeps ticking. Full numbers in this series’ foreign-employment post, and the overview in our SSF for foreign employment guide.

How to Claim the Lump Sum (8.33%)

  1. Confirm employment end is recorded (employer-side exit in the SSF system).
  2. KYC complete? Claims stall on incomplete KYC/nominee details — fix first (KYC guide comes later this series).
  3. Apply via the SSF portal/office with citizenship, SSN and bank details.
  4. Track the claim; payment lands in your bank account.

What NOT to Do

  • Don’t withdraw just because you can. The 8.33% lump sum feels nice; compounding toward 180 months is the actual wealth.
  • Don’t let an employer “settle SSF in cash.” Off-book settlements = your money never reached the fund. Check your statement.
  • Don’t lose your SSN — it’s your lifetime financial ID within SSF.

FAQ

Can I withdraw all my SSF money when I quit my job?

You can claim the retirement-benefit pot (8.33% + additions) as a lump sum. The pension pot (20%) is designed to stay until age 60 — that’s the part that becomes your lifelong pension.

Do my contribution months reset with a new employer?

No. Your SSN is permanent — months accumulate across employers toward the 180-month pension qualification.

What if my new company isn’t SSF-registered?

Employers within SSF’s mandate must register (employer registration guide). Meanwhile, ask about your options for continuing as self-employed so your account keeps moving.

I left a job years ago and never claimed. Is the money gone?

No — it sits in your account. Complete KYC, then claim the 8.33% or leave everything growing toward pension. Check your balance first (balance check guide).
